The much-anticipated ‘Ramayana’ is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic spectacles of 2026, with Ranbir Kapoor stepping into the divine role of Lord Rama. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. But what’s got everyone talking is the casting of Arun Govil—the OG Lord Rama from Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV series—as King Dasharath. Naturally, the comparison game has begun, and Govil has now addressed the backlash that came Ranbir’s way after the first look dropped.
Arun Govil Praises Ranbir Kapoor But Holds Back on Performance
In a recent conversation with a leading entertainment outlet, Govil was full of warmth for Ranbir but chose to keep his thoughts on the actual performance under wraps until the film releases. “As Rama, I won’t be able to tell you anything about him, but he is a good actor, there is no doubt about that. He is also a fine human being,” Govil said. He added that every actor approaches a character in their own unique way, and Ranbir must have played Lord Rama in his own style.
The veteran actor’s restraint shows respect for the craft—he didn’t want to pre-judge Ranbir’s work without seeing the final product. Fans, however, are already drawing parallels between the two portrayals, and Govil seems to understand why.
Why Comparisons with Govil’s Rama Are Inevitable
When asked about the mixed reactions to Ranbir’s first look, Govil gave a thoughtful take. He believes his own portrayal of Lord Rama became the touchstone for millions. “That perhaps is also because my performance as Lord Rama became the touchstone. It is still alive in the hearts and minds of people. Nobody wants to see another Rama,” he explained. He pointed out that his ‘Ramayan’ still airs across channels, and even today at fairs and gatherings, Lord Rama’s photos often feature his face. “So, for me, to talk about an actor’s performance as Lord Rama doesn’t feel right,” he added.
Govil’s humility shines through—he’s not dismissing Ranbir’s talent but acknowledging the emotional weight his own version carries in the public consciousness. The backlash, he suggests, is less about Ranbir and more about the deep connection people have with his iconic portrayal.
Ranbir Kapoor to Play Dual Role of Rama and Parshurama
Here’s a twist that has fans even more excited: Ranbir won’t just play Lord Rama in the film. Speaking at the teaser launch in Los Angeles, the actor revealed he also takes on the role of Lord Parshurama, another avatar of Lord Vishnu. “Lord Vishnu had different avatars. Lord Rama was an avatar, and Lord Parshurama was an avatar before Lord Rama,” Ranbir explained. He shared how he prepared for the dual challenge, focusing on the spirituality and emotionality of the characters rather than just physical transformation. “I think if you deeply understand the spirituality and the emotionality of the characters, I think everything starts from there. That’s what I did the year leading up to the shoot,” he said.
The film, backed by producer Namit Malhotra, is set for a grand Diwali 2026 release. With a powerhouse cast, a legendary actor as Dasharath, and Ranbir taking on two divine roles, the wait is going to be long—but it promises to be worth it.
