Actor opens up about dialect challenges

Manoj Bajpayee is known for his meticulous preparation, but even he felt the pressure while getting into character for his upcoming film Governor. The National Award-winning actor recently admitted that perfecting the regional dialect for his role had him ‘scared and nervous.’

‘I was very scared and nervous because actors, especially people like me, I don’t like to go wrong with language and diction,’ Bajpayee shared in a candid chat. ‘I am from Bihar. So, I know how much I get offended (with language being wrongly spoken).’

The actor, who hails from Bihar himself, stressed that authenticity in language is crucial for him. But he also knows that a film made in Hindi needs to strike a balance so that audiences across the country can connect with the story.

Striking a balance between authenticity and reach

Bajpayee explained that while it’s important to capture the essence of the character’s background, going overboard with accent or dialect can distract from the narrative. ‘It is better to go to the minimum, I always say because you are making it in Hindi. You need to play up the essence of that language. However, you are not supposed to be completely indulgent about the accent because it will take away the attention from the matter,’ he said.

The team consciously worked to preserve the cultural flavour associated with the character without letting the dialect overshadow the story. ‘That is why we have tried to keep a lot of measured things in this, the culture behind the language,’ Bajpayee added.

For the actor, getting the dialect right wasn’t just about personal satisfaction—it was about respecting the real-life people and events the film portrays. Governor is based on true events from India’s economic history in the 1990s, a period of financial instability and big decisions.

What to expect from Governor

Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced under Sunshine Pictures by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, Governor features Bajpayee in the lead alongside Adah Sharma. The trailer hints at themes of governance, decision-making, and institutional challenges, with Bajpayee playing a central figure navigating the economic crisis.

The screenplay is written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Adding to the film’s appeal is music by Amit Trivedi and lyrics by Javed Akhtar, which promises a rich auditory experience.

Governor is scheduled to hit theatres on June 12, 2026. With Bajpayee’s commitment to authenticity and a gripping historical backdrop, this one is definitely worth keeping on your radar.
