The Legal Notice That Started It All
Salman Khan’s legal team has fired off a formal notice to the producers of the upcoming film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, ordering them to immediately halt its release and pull down all promotional material. The notice warns of further legal action if the makers don’t comply, signaling that the superstar is not messing around when it comes to this project.
Industry insiders say the action was prompted by the film’s unmistakable connection to Salman’s infamous 1998 blackbuck poaching case—a legal battle that has dragged on for over two decades. While the film’s title translates to ‘Black Deer,’ the creative team has been coy about how closely the story mirrors real events. But the timing and subject matter have left little room for doubt among fans and critics alike.
The Controversial Connection to the Blackbuck Case
The blackbuck case dates back to 1998, when Salman and several other actors were accused of hunting and killing two blackbucks during the shoot of Hum Saath Saath Hain in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The protected species is sacred in the region, and the incident sparked a massive legal saga that has seen multiple rulings over the years. Salman was convicted in 2018 and later acquitted on appeal, but the case remains a sensitive chapter in his career.
With Kala Hiran reportedly drawing from this very controversy, Salman’s camp is worried that the film could sensationalise or misrepresent the facts. The superstar’s legal team has therefore stepped in to prevent what they see as potential damage to his reputation. The film’s first-look poster—featuring a mysterious central character against a dramatic red-and-blue background—was recently unveiled, and the teaser is scheduled to drop on June 20. That rollout is now in jeopardy thanks to the legal blockade.
Makers Refuse to Back Down
Producer Amit Jani, who has previously worked on projects based on real-life incidents, isn’t taking the notice lying down. In a statement, Jani accused the legal action of being nothing more than an intimidation tactic, driven by Salman’s massive star power. ‘This is clearly an attempt to pressure the team into backing down,’ he said, suggesting that the filmmakers are being bullied into silence.
Despite the notice, Jani and director Bharat S Shrinate are moving ahead with their plans. They describe the film as an action-driven drama inspired by real-life legal battles, presented with an international-style treatment. The team argues that they have the right to tell this story, regardless of who it may remind people of. So far, Salman and his legal team have not responded to Jani’s allegations publicly, but the war of words is just heating up.
With a legal notice already served and the teaser launch looming, all eyes are now on whether Kala Hiran will ever see the light of day—or if Salman’s legal muscle will succeed in keeping it under wraps. One thing’s for sure: this controversial film is already making more noise before release than most movies manage in a lifetime.
