The Onion Incident on Gupt Sets
Bobby Deol recently took a trip down memory lane and revealed a rather hilarious anecdote from the sets of the 1997 thriller Gupt: The Hidden Truth. During an appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, the actor recalled refusing to shoot an intimate scene with co-star Manisha Koirala because of an unexpected reason — the smell of onions from her mouth.
The episode saw Bobby discussing his reputation as a prankster during his early career days. When asked about stories suggesting he often played jokes on his female co-stars, Bobby shared this particular incident from Gupt. He explained that Manisha had a fondness for a popular street snack, which created a challenge during the filming of a close scene.
“Yes, I remember. It was cold when we were shooting and there was someone selling chana zor garam, and she was eating it with great pleasure,” Bobby said. The actor explained that an intimate sequence was scheduled soon after, where Manisha’s character had to bite his chin during a song sequence.
Revenge Plan That Backfired
“There was a whole scene pending, where she had to bite on my chin during the song. I was unable to give any expressions due to the smell of onions from her mouth,” he recalled. Bobby then narrated how he tried to get back at his co-star through a prank. He remembered convincing another actor in the film to eat onions before a scene involving Manisha.
“How do I take revenge on her? There was a scene happening inside the college, where her brother or someone comes to beat me. He was a new actor, so I told him to eat onions to improve his acting,” Bobby said. The actor admitted that the plan did not work as expected. “I made him eat so many onions, but when he gave the shot, Manisha did not behave any different. You are immature at that age,” he added with a laugh.
