From Haathkadi to Aankhen: A Blockbuster Run
Nihalani produced some of the most iconic Hindi films of the 80s and 90s. His filmography includes crowd-pullers like Haathkadi (1982), Izaam (1986), Aag Hi Aag (1987), Paap Ki Duniya (1988), and Gunahon Ka Faisla (1990).
But his biggest hits came from collaborations with director David Dhawan and superstar Govinda. Shola Aur Shabnam (1992) and Aankhen (1993) remain beloved comedies that defined an entire generation of Bollywood fans. He also produced Andaz (1994) starring Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla.
In the 2000s, Nihalani continued to back projects like Uljhan (2001), Talaash: The Hunt Begins (2003), and Hello Mumbai (2016). His last film was Anari Is Back, which released in 2023.
The Feisty CBFC Chief
Beyond producing, Nihalani made headlines as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) from January 2015 to August 2017. His tenure was marked by controversial cuts and bans, sparking debates on censorship in Indian cinema. He was never one to shy away from a showdown, whether it was over film certifications or public spats with filmmakers.
His death marks the end of a colorful chapter in Bollywood. Fans and colleagues are paying tribute to a man who wore many hats — producer, censor chief, and never a dull moment.
