Day 20 Collections See a Dip

Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s fantasy entertainer ‘Karuppu’ is showing signs of slowing down at the box office as it enters its third week. According to Sacnilk estimates, the film earned Rs 1.55 crore India net on Day 20, a 24.4 percent drop from the previous day’s Rs 2.05 crore. The total India net collection now stands at Rs 188.45 crore. The Tamil version remained the strongest contributor, bringing in Rs 1.25 crore, while the Telugu version added Rs 30 lakhs. Occupancy figures show that night shows are still drawing audiences, with the Tamil version recording an overall occupancy of 15.15 percent and night shows at 17.23 percent.

The film, directed by RJ Balaji, has been a much-needed success for Suriya and the Tamil film industry. After a string of underwhelming releases, ‘Karuppu’ opened to strong numbers and has sustained well over three weeks. However, the daily collections are now tapering off, indicating that the film is entering the final leg of its theatrical run.

Worldwide Gross Nears Rs 300 Crore

Despite the dip, ‘Karuppu’ is inching closer to the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide. The India gross collection has reached Rs 217.87 crore, and overseas earnings stand at Rs 79.25 crore, taking the worldwide gross to Rs 297.12 crore. That’s just Rs 2.88 crore shy of the big milestone. Industry insiders expect the film to cross Rs 300 crore within the next couple of days, especially with weekend screenings ahead.

The overseas contribution has been steady, with the film adding Rs 50 lakhs on Day 20. Among all language versions, Tamil continues to dominate, contributing the bulk of the domestic earnings. The Telugu version, though smaller, has also chipped in consistently. The film’s performance in multiplexes has been particularly strong, with urban centers showing better occupancy than single screens.

Audience Reactions Pour In

‘Karuppu’ continues to generate buzz on social media, with fans and critics sharing their thoughts. One viewer expressed relief that Suriya finally got a hit, saying the actor, the producer, and Kollywood all needed this win. Another praised the film’s first half for its clever writing and engaging moments, but felt the second half played it safe. The clash between God and Human premise has been widely appreciated for its freshness.

RJ Balaji, who made his directorial debut with this film, has been hailed for his smart storytelling. The film’s commercial elements, especially in the second half, have worked well with mass audiences. With word-of-mouth still positive, ‘Karuppu’ is expected to have a decent run in the coming weeks, though the daily numbers will continue to decline. For now, Suriya can breathe easy – his film is a bonafide hit.
