The Final Farewell

The legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja was laid to rest in Theni on Thursday, with fans and celebs gathering in huge numbers to give him a tearful send-off. The veteran director, who passed away at 85 due to age-related health issues, had his mortal remains brought to his hometown earlier in the day.

From political leaders to film personalities — everyone came together to honour the man who shaped Tamil cinema for over four decades. AIADMK leaders Sellur K Raju and RB Udhayakumar, along with directors P Samuthirakani and Vetri Maaran, were among the prominent faces at the funeral. Actor Suhasini Mani Ratnam also made her way to Theni to pay her respects.

The authorities left no stone unturned in making arrangements for the final rites. DIG Sasi Mohan personally inspected the venue and security was tightened to manage the massive crowd of mourners. It was a sight to behold — fans lining up with flowers, their eyes wet with gratitude for the man who put rural Tamil stories on the big screen.

Rajinikanth’s Emotional Tribute

Before the mortal remains reached Theni, superstar Rajinikanth visited Bharathiraja’s Chennai residence to offer his condolences. Speaking to the media outside, the Thalaiva got emotional as he remembered the filmmaker’s immense contributions. “Bharathiraja played a pivotal role in nurturing and elevating the South Indian film industry. He made the industry flourish and gave it new life,” Rajinikanth said.

The superstar went on to highlight how Bharathiraja was always the first to stand up for artists and technicians in distress. “Whenever directors, actors or anyone from the film fraternity faced difficulties, he would stand up for them, fight for their rights and help resolve their problems,” he added. Rajinikanth’s words echoed the sentiment of an entire industry that has lost its guiding light.

Other stars like Suriya and Thiagarajan also visited the filmmaker’s residence to pay homage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too remembered Bharathiraja as a towering figure of Indian cinema who transformed Tamil filmmaking and beautifully portrayed rural life on screen.

A Legacy That Shaped Tamil Cinema

Bharathiraja’s journey began with his directorial debut in 1977 — the iconic 16 Vayathinile, which introduced audiences to raw, earthy storytelling. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he directed over 40 films and earned the title “Iyakkunar Imayam” (The Himalaya of Directors) for his unparalleled contribution. Classics like Kizhake Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai and Mudhal Mariyathai remain etched in the hearts of Tamil audiences.

Apart from directing, Bharathiraja also wore the actor’s hat with equal flair. His recent screen appearance was in Thudarum, while his unreleased film Pulavar will mark his final acting role. Over the years, he featured in films like Aayutha Ezhuthu, Pandianadu, Eeswaran, Thiruchitrambalam and Maharaja.

As the sun set over Theni, the director who gave life to rural landscapes on screen returned to the soil. But his cinema — that raw, honest, heartfelt cinema — will live forever, yaar. Rest in peace, legend.
