Steady despite the storm
Karan Johar’s latest romantic drama Chand Mera Dil might have opened to mixed reviews, but it’s proving that love can still find its way to the box office. The film, starring Ananya Panday as Chandni and Lakshya as Aarav, has quietly crossed the Rs 27 crore mark worldwide in just eight days.
On its second Friday, the film earned Rs 1.30 crore across 2,665 shows in India, according to industry tracking sources. While that’s a 40.9% drop from its Thursday numbers, the total India net collection now stands at an estimated Rs 20.75 crore, with the India gross reaching approximately Rs 24.50 crore.
What’s making the numbers sweeter is the overseas performance. The film has grossed Rs 3.05 crore internationally, pushing its total worldwide gross to an estimated Rs 27.55 crore. Not bad for a film that had a quiet pre-release buzz.
Frame-by-frame breakdown
Let’s talk day-wise numbers because yaar, we love a good graph. The film opened with Rs 3 crore on Day 1 and saw a healthy jump to Rs 3.65 crore on Day 2. Day 3 was the highest so far at Rs 4.25 crore, before settling into the week with Rs 2.25 crore (Day 4), Rs 2.10 crore (Day 5), Rs 1.90 crore (Day 6), and Rs 2.20 crore (Day 7). Day 8’s Rs 1.30 crore brings the total India net to Rs 20.75 crore.
While those numbers might not scream blockbuster, context matters — and Chand Mera Dil has plenty of it. The film released on May 22, 2026, going head-to-head with the Hollywood giant Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s now sharing screens in its second week with Ayushmann Khurrana’s Pati Patni Aur Woh Do. Navigating this crowded theatrical landscape, Week 1 can be considered a reasonable hold.
More than just numbers
While box office collections tell one story, the audience reaction tells another. Despite the lukewarm critical response, the film has found an audience that appreciates its grounded and healthy portrayal of love. Industry insiders reveal that viewers are particularly praising the lead pair’s dynamic, which steers clear of the toxic relationship tropes that often dominate Bollywood romances.
The supporting cast includes Aastha Singh as Jyotsna, along with Pratham Rathod, Aashish Dubey, Ankur Poddar, and Elvis Jose. Directed by Vivek Soni, the film is backed by Dharma Productions and has been generating chatter for its fresh approach to romance in an era of dark thrillers and action blockbusters.
As Chand Mera Dil enters its second week, all eyes are on whether word-of-mouth can give it the legs to cross the Rs 30 crore mark. Given the current competition, even a steady hold would be a win for this gentle love story. After all, in Bollywood, sometimes slow and steady really does win the race — or at least the weekend numbers.
