Bobby Deol is spilling the chai on one of the most painful chapters of his career. In a candid chat on Aap Ki Adalat, the actor revisited the heartbreak of being replaced from Jab We Met — a film he originally envisioned as his comeback vehicle.
The Story That Broke Bobby Deol’s Heart
Long before Jab We Met became the beloved romantic classic we all know, Bobby was the man trying to make it happen. He had spotted Imtiaz Ali’s talent early after watching the rough cut of Socha Na Tha, and personally got both Imtiaz and Kareena Kapoor on board. Bobby then shopped the project to production houses, convinced he had found the perfect creative partnership.
“That story is done now. We’re friends. My heart got broken because I needed a film like this during that phase of my career,” Bobby recalled on the show. The production house he pitched to initially passed, calling Imtiaz too expensive. But then — arre bhai — the same production house ended up making the film with Imtiaz, the same heroine Kareena, but replaced Bobby with Shahid Kapoor as the male lead.
This isn’t the first time Bobby has spoken about the wound. Last year on Raj Shamani’s podcast Figuring Out, the emotion was still raw: “I was heartbroken. I was not getting work… It happened in a bad way.”
Imtiaz Ali’s Version: A Different Perspective
But like most industry tales, this one has two sides. Imtiaz Ali, in a previous interview, offered context that complicates the narrative of a simple betrayal. He revealed that after Socha Na Tha, he waited for two years with the Jab We Met script because he wanted Bobby to star in it. However, Bobby was getting offers from big directors and kept postponing the project.
“Because I did Socha Na Tha for five years and didn’t do a film for two years after that, it was putting financial strain on me. Then I told Bobby, ‘Let’s not make this film. Let’s shake our hands and decide we will not do this film together because then our thing will be affected,’” Imtiaz shared.
Whether it was betrayal or circumstance, the heartbreak was very real for Bobby. And yaar, who can blame him?
Turning Pain into Purpose: Bobby’s Comeback Journey
Rather than staying stuck in victim mode, Bobby chose to channel the anger into something powerful. “These things do happen. It never happens that only good things happen to someone. When I began working on myself, I decided the hurt and anger I’ve gone through should become my strength. Because you can’t just keep crying about it. These things made me a better person and a better actor,” he said.
And kya baat hai — that mindset paid off big time. Bobby staged one of Hindi cinema’s most unlikely comebacks, first with Prakash Jha’s Aashram, then with a scene-stealing role in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal in 2023, and most recently with Aryan Khan’s Netflix directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood. Now he’s gearing up for Bandar, directed by Anurag Kashyap and releasing on June 5, 2026. The dark thriller also stars Sanya Malhotra, Sapna Pabbi, Saba Azad, and more.
Bobby Deol’s journey proves that sometimes the biggest heartbreaks can lead to the greatest comebacks. As he says, “I’ve only learnt from them. I don’t have any qualms with anyone.” And with Bandar on the horizon, it looks like the best is yet to come.
