The psychology behind keeping work and marriage separate
It’s been over a decade since Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan shared top billing on the big screen, and according to the actor, that distance has been entirely intentional. In a recent chat, Saif got candid about why the couple keeps passing on joint scripts and what it would finally take to bring Saifeena back together.
For Saif, the core problem with acting alongside your spouse isn’t logistical—it’s psychological. The very ease that makes a marriage work, he argued, is precisely what kills on-screen chemistry. “I think discomfort and conflict lead to good chemistry,” he explained in an interview with Variety India. “Comfort and ease, especially if I’m more worried about her comfort – that’s not a good way to act.”
He was equally frank about the competitive instinct that good acting demands. “I’ve always felt it’s very easy to offer something boring. There’s nothing as boring as a nice off-screen couple coming on screen together,” he shared. Saif added that he genuinely enjoys the routine of working with different people during the day and returning home to Kareena at night—a rhythm that keeps both the marriage and the work alive.
A Hollywood-inspired murder mystery could be the answer
As for the project that could finally end their decade-long big screen hiatus, Saif is looking to Hollywood for a model. “I keep thinking of that murder mystery which I saw Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler do,” he said, referencing Netflix’s hit Murder Mystery franchise. “Husband and wife rekindling the excitement in their marriage through a murder mystery… that was kind of fun. So maybe there’s something out there like that.”
Despite the careful conditions he sets, Saif left no doubt about the depth of his admiration for Kareena as a performer. “It’ll be my honour,” he said warmly. “She’s a phenomenal actor and a phenomenal presence.”
Fans have been waiting since ‘Agent Vinod’
The couple’s last full-length collaboration was the 2012 spy thriller Agent Vinod, followed by Kareena’s brief cameo in Happy Ending in 2014. Their earlier films together—including Omkara, Tashan, Kurbaan, and the animated Roadside Romeo—remain cherished by fans who have waited patiently ever since. With Saif now hinting at a possible reunion, the wait might finally be over. But only if the script is a murder mystery, of course.
