Bollywood’s loss is Tamil cinema’s gain — and Suriya is laughing all the way to the bank. His latest blockbuster Karuppu has officially entered the elite Rs 200 crore club in India, becoming the actor’s first film to achieve that milestone domestically. After 17 days of release, the film has collected approximately Rs 210.25 crore at the Indian box office, with industry sources calling it a game-changer for the star’s career.
Interestingly, Suriya didn’t even have a Rs 100 crore domestic grosser before this. Now he’s jumped straight into double century territory. Karuppu is also the 14th Tamil film to cross the Rs 200 crore mark in India — a testament to the growing power of regional cinema.
A Historic First for Suriya
For years, Suriya delivered solid hits but never crossed that magical three-figure mark domestically. Karuppu changed all that in its opening week itself. The film earned Rs 129.75 crore in its first week and added another Rs 63.75 crore in its second week, setting the stage for a historic third weekend.
During its third weekend, the film earned an estimated Rs 16.75 crore — with Friday bringing in Rs 4.00 crore, Saturday Rs 6.00 crore, and Sunday Rs 6.75 crore. That pushed the total Indian gross to Rs 210.25 crore. While the weekend saw a 60 per cent drop compared to previous levels, industry insiders say the collections have stabilised since the second Tuesday, indicating strong word-of-mouth.
Box Office Breakdown: Tamil Nadu Leads the Charge
Unsurprisingly, Tamil Nadu remains the film’s strongest market. Karuppu has collected approximately Rs 140.50 crore from the state alone and is expected to cross Rs 150 crore soon. It’s already sitting at the 13th position among the highest-grossing Tamil films in the state, and if the current trend holds, it could break into the top ten by the end of the week.
Outside Tamil Nadu, the film has done respectable business in other southern territories. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contributed around Rs 32.50 crore, while Karnataka added Rs 21.25 crore. Kerala chipped in with Rs 13.50 crore, and the rest of India contributed Rs 2.50 crore. The total now stands at Rs 210.25 crore, with Tamil Nadu accounting for nearly 67 per cent of the domestic haul.
What’s Next for Karuppu?
Box office tracking suggests the film still has some gas left in the tank. Based on current trends, Karuppu is expected to add another Rs 20 to 25 crore before completing its theatrical run, taking the lifetime domestic collection to around Rs 230-235 crore. That would make it one of the biggest Tamil grossers of the year.
For Suriya, this is more than just numbers. After years of being labelled a star who couldn’t crack the big league in India, Karuppu has silenced the doubters. The film’s success also bodes well for his upcoming projects, with fans already buzzing about what he’ll do next. For now, though, it’s time to celebrate — and maybe break out the biryani.
