Second weekend numbers show a steep drop
Lakshya and Ananya Panday’s romantic drama Chand Mera Dil has managed to cross the Rs 23 crore mark at the Indian box office, but the road ahead is looking bumpy. The film collected an estimated Rs 5 crore in its second weekend, with Sunday bringing in nearly Rs 2 crore — a modest 10 per cent jump from Saturday.
However, industry sources point out that the second Sunday collections were down by about 55 per cent compared to the first Sunday. That’s a massive drop, suggesting that the initial curiosity factor has worn off and the film hasn’t generated enough word-of-mouth buzz to pull in new audiences.
After 10 days in theatres, the total stands at Rs 23.20 crore nett in India. By the end of the second week, it’s expected to touch the Rs 25 crore mark. But with a slew of new releases lined up from the third weekend onwards, maintaining that pace could be a challenge.
New releases pose a threat
Upcoming films like Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Peddi, and Bandar are all set to hit screens soon, and they’re likely to eat into screen share and audience attention. Sources close to the production reveal that the competition for prime show timings is going to get tougher from here on.
Directed by Vivek Soni and backed by Dharma Productions, Chand Mera Dil has received mixed reactions from viewers. While some have praised the story and performances, the overall response hasn’t been strong enough to create a wave of positive chatter. That’s a problem for a romantic drama in today’s market, where audiences tend to flock to action, thriller, or franchise films.
In fact, the romantic genre has been struggling at the box office since 2020. Very few love stories have managed to score big commercially, making it an uphill battle for any new release in this space.
Day-wise breakdown shows a steady but slow run
Here’s how the film has performed day by day so far: Day 1: Rs 2.75 crore, Day 2: Rs 3.50 crore, Day 3: Rs 4.25 crore, Day 4: Rs 2.00 crore, Day 5: Rs 1.75 crore, Day 6: Rs 1.75 crore, Day 7: Rs 2.25 crore, Day 8: Rs 1.25 crore, Day 9: Rs 1.75 crore, and Day 10: Rs 1.95 crore (estimated).
Despite the steep drop from the opening weekend, the film has maintained a relatively steady run through its second week. It’s likely to add a few more crores before its theatrical journey slows down further. For now, all eyes are on whether Chand Mera Dil can hold its ground against the upcoming competition.
