The Screening That Changed the Narrative

Eclectic Films and Dr. Swarnjit Singh recently hosted an exclusive screening of their upcoming documentary 1947: Brexit India in New Delhi. The event drew a distinguished crowd including Member of Parliament and author Dr. Shashi Tharoor, who attended as chief guest, along with diplomats, historians, and media professionals.

The documentary, directed by Sanjivan Lal and written by veteran screenwriter Shama Zaidi, features narration by Bollywood actor Boman Irani. Instead of retreading familiar political stories of Partition, the film takes a hard look at the economic forces that shaped Britain’s hasty departure from the subcontinent.

Speaking at the screening, Tharoor remarked, “History is never merely about the past; it continues to shape the present. Delighted to have contributed to this thoughtful exploration of India’s long encounter with British rule.” He also urged Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences to watch the documentary for a deeper understanding of British rule and India’s independence journey.

What the Documentary Reveals

1947: Brexit India examines how a financially weakened Britain—burdened after World War II and under pressure from American loan conditions—accelerated the Partition process. The film argues that the British transferred significant human and logistical challenges to the newly formed nations of India and Pakistan, all while protecting their own economic interests.

Producer and concept creator Dr. Swarnjit Singh explained the film’s bold approach: “We didn’t set out to make a conventional historical film. We wanted to audit the Empire. The British entered as merchants, operated through a mafia-style grip on our resources, and cut a hasty deal the moment the balance sheet turned red.” He added that the overwhelming response from the screening audience proved that people are hungry for the economic truths behind 1947.

The documentary features expert insights from historian William Dalrymple, security expert Commodore Uday Bhaskar, and political scientist Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, among others. Director Sanjivan Lal noted the challenge of turning ten years of archival research into a gripping narrative. “Our goal was to let the numbers speak alongside the human tragedy,” he said. “Looking at Partition through this economic lens changes the conversation entirely.”

From IFFI to OTT: What’s Next

1947: Brexit India has already made waves at prestigious film festivals. It was selected for screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 2023 and the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in 2024. Now, the documentary is gearing up for its digital premiere on a major OTT platform.

With its fresh perspective on a pivotal moment in Indian history, the film promises to spark conversations—especially among younger viewers who may have only heard the political version of events. As Tharoor put it, every member of Gen Z and Gen Alpha should watch this documentary to truly understand the economic underpinnings of British rule and the road to independence.
