The Follower Trap: Bhumi Gets Candid

Bhumi Pednekar isn’t one to mince words, and her latest take on the Bollywood game is pure gold. During a recent panel, the actor opened up about how social media followers are being mistaken for actual stardom—and she’s not having it. “I feel I am very lucky that I did not debut in that era, otherwise I don’t feel an actor like me would have reached this far,” she said, pointing to how digital metrics have changed the rules of fame.

She didn’t stop there. “Because now, it’s all dependent on social media followers. An increased number of social media followers gives you a niche, but a niche does not convert to ticket sales.” Bhumi made it clear she wasn’t dissing content creators—”People have built their followers on sheer efforts”—but she drew a firm line between popularity and craft. “Acting is a serious profession, and you need to be an actor to survive it.”

Talent Over Numbers: The Industry Wake-Up Call

According to Bhumi, the era of follower-based casting might finally be losing steam. “I feel that followers-based-casting continued till recently, but now there is a realisation that there could be a big community, but that community is not because of acting.” She explained that convincing an audience to actually spend money on a film is hard work. “It takes a lot of effort to get an audience to spend money on you, because nobody likes spending that much money on someone else.”

The actor urged producers to look beyond Instagram likes. “Producers must understand that the real metal is talent.” She also admitted the current storytelling landscape doesn’t pack the same punch as earlier years: “I don’t feel that the stories of today hold the same power as the stories of previous years.” That’s a spicy take, yaar—especially from someone who’s building her own filmography.

Theatre vs. OTT: Bhumi Blames the Audience Too

As someone who’s gearing up to champion the big-screen experience, Bhumi didn’t shy away from holding fans accountable. “And somewhere, the audience is also at fault because they don’t visit the theatres to watch impactful films. Every platform will survive, but if the audience won’t watch a movie in theatres and support it, then what will you do collectively as a community?”

Looking ahead, Bhumi is putting her money where her mouth is. She’s set to star opposite Imran Khan in Adhoore Hum Adhoore Tum, a mature love story marking Khan’s much-anticipated return. If there’s one thing Bhumi Pednekar stands for, it’s betting on raw talent—both her own and the industry’s. And if this conversation is any indication, she’s ready to lead that charge.
