The challenge of erasing modernity

Makers of the upcoming political drama Governor, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Adah Sharma, faced a monumental task while shooting the film. A source close to the production reveals that recreating India’s 1990 economic crisis era on screen required painstaking effort to eliminate every trace of the modern world from real outdoor locations.

“One of the biggest challenges during the making of Governor was recreating an era that feels completely authentic on screen,” the source explains. “Since it was shot extensively in real outdoor locations, a lot of effort went to eliminate everything that looked like the modern world, beginning from the cars, signboards, billboards, mobile towers, and LED displays, right down to the hairstyle and attire of people in a crowd.”

The team had to carefully transform contemporary surroundings into a believable 1990s setting, ensuring every frame transported audiences back in time. The source adds that achieving this required meticulous planning and attention to detail from the entire crew.

A story from India’s turbulent past

Set against the backdrop of India’s 1990 financial crisis, Governor explores a crucial chapter in the nation’s history. Inspired by true events, the film transports audiences to one of the most turbulent periods in India’s economic history, unfolding a story of high-stakes decisions, political maneuvering, and institutional conflict.

The trailer, which received an enthusiastic response from audiences, teases a narrative driven by uncertainty and ambition. National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee commands attention, portraying a Governor at the heart of a nation-defining moment. Adah Sharma also stars in what promises to be a gripping political drama.

Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the Sunshine Pictures banner, the film is co-produced by Aashin A. Shah. The script comes from a team of writers including Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah himself.

Music and release details

Adding to the film’s period authenticity, legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar has penned the lyrics, with music composed by Amit Trivedi. The combination of Akhtar’s words and Trivedi’s music is expected to complement the film’s intense narrative.

Governor is set to hit cinemas on June 12, 2026. With its meticulous recreation of a bygone era and a powerhouse performance from Bajpayee, the film is already generating significant buzz among audiences eager for a compelling historical drama.
