Prosit Roy On Why He Said Yes To Raakh After Paatal Lok

Following the success of Paatal Lok, director Prosit Roy explains what made the crime series Raakh different and emotionally compelling.

After delivering one of the most gripping crime thrillers in recent times with Paatal Lok, director Prosit Roy wasn’t exactly itching to dive back into the same genre. But then came Raakh—and something about this missing person investigation hit different.

The Reluctance to Return to Crime

Prosit Roy admits that he wasn’t actively looking for another crime show. Coming off the high of Paatal Lok, he wanted to explore something entirely fresh. But when the narration for Raakh arrived, he realised this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill whodunit. According to the director, the project offered layers that went beyond the usual suspects and clues—it was the emotional depth that sealed the deal.

“I was not very keen to do another crime show because I was coming out of Paatal Lok and I was looking for something different,” Roy shared. “But when Raakh came to me and I heard the narration, I felt this is not just another crime series. There is something more to it. There is a lot more emotion that needs to be explored here.” He emphasised that even the investigating officer in this series is unlike any we’ve seen before on screen.

Human Psychology at the Core

For Roy, Raakh is far more than a puzzle to be solved. It digs deep into the psyche of every character entangled in the mystery. The director describes the show as a study of human psychology on multiple levels. “It is about a son fighting inner battles and accepting his identity, about two perpetrators with a certain ideology and thought process, about grief and learning to live with it, and also about two kids who fought back,” he revealed.

That focus on emotion and internal conflict is what sets Raakh apart from the crowded field of crime dramas streaming today. Instead of just following clues, viewers will walk through the emotional wreckage left behind by a disappearance—and that, Roy says, is where the real story lives.

Star Cast and Release Plans

Leading the series is Ali Fazal, who steps into the role of a man searching for answers. He’s joined by Sonali Bendre and Aamir Bashir, both playing pivotal roles in this tangled narrative. The show is directed and executive produced by Prosit Roy, while the story has been created, written, and co-directed by Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket.

Produced by Endemol Shine India in collaboration with BhaDiPa, Raakh is set to premiere on Prime Video on June 12. The series will be available in India and across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. If you’re looking for a crime show that actually makes you feel something, this one might just be your next binge.
