A History Lesson for the Young’uns

Manoj Bajpayee is gearing up to take Gen Z on a time-travel ride with his upcoming film, Governor. Set for release on June 12, 2026, the movie dives into India’s financial crisis of the early 1990s — a chapter that changed the country forever. And the actor wants the younger generation to know what life was really like back then.

“They should know that there was a time when there were no soft drinks. There was no mall,” Bajpayee said, reflecting on the era before economic liberalisation. He added, “In 1992, the first cricket match was telecast. So, we are talking about that time.” For him, the film isn’t just entertainment — it’s an education about a pre-liberalisation India that’s almost unrecognisable today. Arrey, imagine stepping into a world where malls didn’t exist and every soft drink was a luxury!

The Economics of Acting

Bajpayee admitted that getting into character for Governor wasn’t easy, especially when it came to understanding the economic jargon. “Since I am not a big student of economics, it becomes very important and crucial for me that whatever I say has to be valid and perfect,” he revealed. The actor invested serious time in studying the balance of payments and other economic concepts to ensure his dialogue hit the right note.

He explained that so much crucial information has been left out of common knowledge, and he wanted to bring it to the forefront. It’s this dedication that makes Bajpayee one of the most respected performers in the industry. From economic terms to the mood of the nation in the early ’90s, he left no stone unturned in his preparation.

Behind the Scenes of Governor

Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under Sunshine Pictures, Governor has a powerhouse team backing it. The screenplay is penned by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah himself. Adding to the film’s grandeur, veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar has penned the songs, while Amit Trivedi composes the music.

The film is based on real-life events, depicting a nation grappling with severe financial crisis and the tough decisions that reshaped its future. Mark your calendars — Governor hits cinemas on June 12, 2026. And if you’re a Gen Z kid wondering what life was like before smartphones and swiggy, this one’s for you!
