The Tamil film fraternity is mourning the loss of legendary director Bharathiraja, who passed away on June 10 after a prolonged illness. Dubbed the ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’ (The Himalaya of Directors), the 82-year-old filmmaker was known for revolutionizing rural storytelling in Tamil cinema and launching numerous careers. Among the many celebs who paid their last respects was none other than Thalaivar Rajinikanth, who visited the director’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, to say a final goodbye.
‘He Was My Friend for Nearly 50 Years’
A visibly emotional Rajinikanth spoke to the media after paying his respects. The superstar shared the depth of their bond, calling Bharathiraja a true companion for half a century. ‘Everyone knows about his talent and achievements. He introduced many actors, actresses, and technicians into the world of movies and contributed to the growth of Tamil cinema,’ Rajinikanth said.
The actor also recalled the director’s fearless nature. ‘He used to speak out his mind, not caring for any fear. He was like a child at heart. Whatever he felt, he would say it directly. He used to criticize me too. He would tell me, ‘I like you as a person, but I don’t like your acting.’ That was the kind of honesty he had. Being around him was always joyful. People who speak so openly are very rare.’
A Friendship That Stayed Honest and Bold
Rajinikanth credited Bharathiraja’s blunt honesty for keeping him grounded. The duo worked together on the iconic film ’16 Vayathinile’, where Rajinikanth played the unforgettable role of Parattai. That film marked the beginning of a creative partnership and a personal bond that lasted decades. The superstar noted that the director’s candidness helped him maintain close ties with other big names like MGR and Karunanidhi.
In typical filmy style, Rajinikanth became nostalgic about the times they spent together. ‘People like him are one in a million. His honesty and boldness are qualities I have never seen in anyone else,’ he added.
‘I Wanted to Meet Him One Last Time’
The most poignant moment came when Rajinikanth expressed his regret over not meeting his friend during his final days. He revealed that he had planned a visit but was told that Bharathiraja was recovering. ‘Unfortunately, I never got the chance to see him one last time. That is something I will always regret. His passing was not sudden, but I still wish I had met him before he left us. He will always remain in my memories, and his works will live forever in the hearts of Tamil people,’ the superstar said.
Rajinikanth’s words left many fans emotional, as they saw the vulnerable side of the usually stoic icon. Bharathiraja’s legacy remains intact through his timeless films, and the outpouring of love from the industry proves just how much he meant to Indian cinema. Rest in peace, Iyakkunar Imayam.
