25 Years of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha

It’s been 25 years since Gadar: Ek Prem Katha stormed into theatres, and the film’s magic is still fresh in fans’ minds. Released on June 15, 2001, alongside Aamir Khan’s Lagaan, the Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel-starrer became an iconic blockbuster. To mark the silver jubilee, director Anil Sharma has shared a massive update about the much-awaited third film in the franchise.

Speaking about the film’s legacy, Sharma said he feels blessed by the fanbase that has kept Gadar alive for decades. “The day the film’s writer, Shaktimaan Talwar, narrated the story, I knew it had the potential to become India’s biggest hit film, and it did,” he told Hindustan Times. He added that films like Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, and Sholay have been his inspirations, and Gadar managed to join that elite list with 10 crore footfalls—a record no other film has matched yet.

Gadar 3: What’s the Plan?

Earlier this year, the filmmaker had confirmed that a third instalment is in the works. Now, on the 25th anniversary, Sharma dropped a bigger hint: if all goes according to plan, Gadar 3 could go on the floors in 2027. While he didn’t reveal specific dates or casting details, industry insiders suggest that Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel are expected to reprise their roles, with the story picking up from where Gadar 2 left off.

The update comes after Gadar 2, released in 2023, shattered box office records and proved that the franchise’s mass appeal is far from fading. Sharma noted that while Gadar 2 had half the footfalls of the original, it still pulled in massive numbers, showing the enduring love for Tara Singh and Sakeena’s love story.

Fans Can’t Keep Calm

Social media is already buzzing with excitement. Fans are flooding X (formerly Twitter) with theories about what Gadar 3 could bring—will it revisit the Partition-era drama or take a new twist? One user wrote, “Gadar 3 in 2027? That’s too long, but I’ll wait for Sunny paaji!” Another fan speculated, “Maybe they’ll bring in a new villain to match Amrish Puri’s legacy.”

For now, all eyes are on Anil Sharma and the team to lock the script and begin pre-production. With the franchise’s track record, expectations are sky-high. As Sharma put it, “Gadar is not just a film; it’s an emotion.” And if the 25-year celebration is any indication, that emotion is only getting stronger.
