Karisma Kapoor’s big comeback

Karisma Kapoor is back on screen after a long break, and she’s shedding her 1990s bubbly image for something darker. In Abhinay Deo’s crime thriller Brown, streaming on Zee5, she plays Inspector Rita Brown, a cop haunted by personal tragedy.

The seven-episode series kicks off with a murder mystery that hooks you right in. Karisma delivers a performance that reminds everyone why she’s a star, even after all these years. She brings intensity and vulnerability to a character dealing with grief, alcoholism, and trauma.

A familiar plot that loses steam

Rita’s story begins with a devastating personal loss—her husband (played by singer Shaan) is killed in a homicide, and she loses her unborn child. Living with her mother (Soni Razdan), she drowns in grief and alcohol, unable to move on. But when a new case emerges, she’s forced back into action.

The series keeps viewers engaged with strong performances, especially from Karisma and Surya Sharma. But as the mystery unfolds, the predictability creeps in. The climax, unfortunately, feels too familiar, and the psychological themes introduced earlier aren’t fully explored. What starts as a gripping thriller ends up losing its steam.

A return worth watching, flaws and all

Despite the predictable ending, Brown is a solid comeback for Karisma Kapoor. She proves she can carry a dark, emotional role with ease. Fans who’ve missed her on screen will find plenty to appreciate, even if the story doesn’t stick the landing.

If you’re in the mood for a crime thriller with a strong lead performance, Brown is worth a watch. Just don’t expect the twist to blow your mind.
