The Big Announcement

Buckle up, Bollywood fans—the infamous blackbuck poaching case involving Salman Khan is getting the cinematic treatment. Producer Amit Jani has officially announced Kala Hiran: The Battle For Legacy, a crime drama that promises to cover everything from the 1998 hunting incident to the ongoing tensions between Salman and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. The first-look poster is already out, and the teaser is set to drop on June 20, 2026.

Directed by Bharat S. Shrinate, the film is backed by Jani Firefox Media Private Limited. Jani took to X to share the poster and confirm the story, telling IANS that the movie will show “the hunting of a black buck by Salman Khan” in 1998, the subsequent court drama, and “the rivalry between Lawrence Bishnoi and Salman Khan.” The shoot took place across Sambhal, Moradabad, and other cities in Uttar Pradesh. While the cast remains under wraps, Jani hinted that the real-life co-stars who were present during the original incident—Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, and Satish Shah—will all be portrayed. “Audiences have waited a long time for a cinematic story around Salman Khan, Lawrence Bishnoi, and the deer hunting case,” Jani noted.

The poster itself is intense, hinting at a gritty, no-holds-barred narrative. Who will play Salman? That’s still a mystery, but speculation is already running wild.

The Real Story Behind the Blackbuck Case

For those who need a refresher: back in October 1998, while filming Hum Saath-Saath Hain near Jodhpur, Salman Khan allegedly shot two blackbucks—a species that is both critically endangered and sacred to the Bishnoi community. The police complaint named not just Salman but also Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, and Neelam. The Bishnois pushed hard for justice, leading to Salman’s arrest and jail time in 1998, 2006, and 2007. In 2018, a Jodhpur court convicted him and handed down a five-year prison sentence. He made bail after just a couple of nights, while his co-stars walked free. The case continues to drag on in higher courts, still unresolved as of 2026.

Kala Hiran will cover all of that: the hunt itself, Salman’s arrest, his sentencing—the whole saga. The film weaves in the recent hostilities as well, especially the threats from Lawrence Bishnoi, who has been vocal about his grudge against Khan for killing the blackbuck. Since 2022, the tension has escalated, with Khan’s security being beefed up considerably.

Can This Film Avoid Controversy?

There’s one big question hanging over Kala Hiran: will it dodge the fate of Jani’s previous film, Udaipur Files? That project stirred controversy but bombed at the box office. Given that this subject involves real people and an unfinished legal battle, the film’s treatment of sensitive material will make or break its reception. The teaser drops June 20, and until then, all we have is the poster, the official plot, and a lot of heated chatter.

Will the movie take sides? Will it dramatize things too much? Only time—and that teaser—will tell. For now, the buzz is real, and cinephiles are already debating whether this is a bold move or a risky gamble.
