Hyderabad and cinema – it’s a love story for the ages. Whether it’s Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, or English, the city’s audience knows how to embrace a good film. And when a movie offers a truly spectacular theatrical experience, Hyderabadis make it their own. One of the biggest examples of this is James Cameron’s Avatar. The 2009 blockbuster didn’t just break records worldwide – it created history in Hyderabad that still feels unbelievable.

When Pandora Came to Life on the Big Screen

Avatar changed the way people experienced movies. With its stunning visuals, breathtaking 3D effects, and the magical world of Pandora, the film became a global phenomenon. Made on a budget of around $237 million, it went on to earn more than $2.9 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing films ever. But no city embraced the film quite like Hyderabad. The craze was so huge that many people watched it multiple times, just to soak in the visual spectacle again and again.

Prasads IMAX: The Theatre That Became a Legend

For many Hyderabadis, Prasads was more than just a theatre. It introduced a new big-screen experience and gave movie lovers a taste of world-class cinema. When Avatar arrived, audiences flocked to Prasads IMAX to witness the magic. The theatre became the epicentre of Pandora’s Hyderabad invasion. The numbers still sound insane even today: a direct run of 266 days, an overall run of 308 days, five shows a day for 106 consecutive days, more than 3.5 lakh footfalls, and a gross collection of around Rs 7.5 crore from a single screen. Yes, you read that right – one screen, over 3.5 lakh people, and Rs 7.5 crore.

A Record That Even Impressed James Cameron

The achievement was so extraordinary that Prasads IMAX reportedly became one of the highest-grossing IMAX screens in the world for the film. Not in America, not in London – right here in Hyderabad. The record became a symbol of the city’s deep love for cinema and its willingness to support great films beyond language barriers. The achievement was so memorable that SS Rajamouli himself mentioned Avatar’s Prasads IMAX records during his interaction with James Cameron. More than a decade later, Avatar’s run at Prasads remains one of the greatest box office stories associated with a single theatre in India. And Hyderabadis still proudly say: Pandora may be fictional, but our love for this film was very real.
