Vikram Bhatt recalls being broke while dating Sushmita Sen

Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt has opened up about a time in his life when he was dating Sushmita Sen but struggling financially. In a candid chat with Siddharth Kannan, Bhatt revealed that despite directing major stars like Aamir Khan, he had no money to his name.

“I was a struggling director. Mere paas zeher khane ke paise nahi the (I didn’t even have money to buy poison). I was directing Aamir Khan and dating Miss Universe, so to say, but I had no money. I was broke. I remember I didn’t even have the money to buy a CD. I’ve lived life like a fakira (a poor man),” Bhatt said.

The filmmaker’s confession has left fans stunned, as it paints a stark contrast between his professional success and personal struggles. Bhatt and Sen fell in love during the filming of Mahesh Bhatt’s Dastak, which marked Sen’s Bollywood debut after winning the Miss Universe crown.

Lessons from past relationships

Bhatt, known for his work in horror films like Raaz and 1920, reflected on how his past relationships taught him valuable life lessons. He admitted that being in a relationship with someone as high-profile as Sen while being financially unstable was a challenging experience.

“I’ve lived life like a fakira,” he reiterated, emphasizing the stark reality of his situation. Despite directing Aamir Khan in Ghulam and working with other big names, Bhatt said he didn’t have the basics—like money to buy a CD or even poison, in his dramatic words.

Industry insiders say that Bhatt’s honesty about his past is rare in Bollywood, where many prefer to gloss over their struggles. The filmmaker has always been known for his candid interviews, and this one is no exception.

Fans react to Vikram Bhatt’s shocking confession

Social media has been buzzing with reactions to Bhatt’s revelation. Fans are divided—some applaud his honesty, while others find it hard to believe that a director of his caliber was once so broke.

“It’s crazy to think that someone who directed Aamir Khan was struggling to buy a CD,” one user wrote on X. Another commented, “Vikram Bhatt’s story is a reminder that success doesn’t always mean financial stability.”

Bhatt’s interview has sparked conversations about the financial realities of the film industry, where even successful directors can face tough times. The filmmaker, however, seems to have moved past that phase, now focusing on his work and personal growth.
