Bollywood veteran Manoj Bajpayee recently shared a heartwarming anecdote from his early days, revealing the legendary Yash Chopra’s generosity. During a candid chat on Shekhar Suman’s show ‘Shekhar Tonite’, the actor opened up about his brief cameo in the 2004 classic ‘Veer-Zaara’ and how the filmmaker paid him his full lead actor fee despite the role being a small one.

The Call That Came After ‘Satya’

Manoj looked back at the phase right after his breakthrough film ‘Satya’ when suddenly big-budget offers started pouring in. But the actor was careful — he turned down several well-paying projects because he didn’t want to be typecast as a villain. For him, stories and characters that matched his creative vision mattered more than the paycheck.

Then came a call from Yash Chopra. The filmmaker had seen Manoj’s performance in ‘Pinjar’ and offered him a cameo in ‘Veer-Zaara’. For Manoj, it was a dream come true. He didn’t even want to hear the full script — he just wanted to be directed by the master filmmaker. As he told Chopra, a one-line explanation of the story and character would be enough.

A Cameo With No Hesitation

Despite Manoj’s casual attitude, Aditya Chopra stepped in and narrated the entire scene to him. The actor was sold instantly. He played the character Raza Sharazi opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles. Manoj later asked Yash Chopra to remember him for a bigger role next time.

To that, the filmmaker gave a direct and honest reply. He said he usually didn’t make films for actors like Manoj — meaning his filmmaking style was different from the kind of roles Manoj typically played. But Manoj appreciated the honesty. He knew Chopra wasn’t making false promises to keep him happy.

Yash Chopra’s Generosity

Then came the part about money. Manoj offered to do the cameo for free. “I won’t take any fees,” he recalled telling Yash Chopra. But the director refused. He later sent Manoj the exact amount he used to charge for a lead role at that time. The move left the actor stunned — Chopra could have easily paid him less for a cameo, but he chose to honour the actor’s value.

‘Veer-Zaara’, released in 2004, went on to become a massive commercial success. The film also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Divya Dutta, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, and Kirron Kher in key roles. It later won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. For Manoj, the experience of working with Yash Chopra remains a cherished memory, and this gesture only added to the respect he already had for the filmmaker.
