Hollywood’s latest horror offering Obsession is proving to be the stuff of box office gold in India. The film, which hit screens on May 29, has crossed nearly Rs 60 crore in collections within 16 days, showing no signs of slowing down. Industry sources reveal the film’s sustained performance is driven by strong word-of-mouth and repeat audiences.
On its third Friday (June 12), Obsession earned Rs 3.30 crore, but saw a massive 75 per cent spike on Saturday (June 13) to Rs 5.75 crore. That’s remarkably close to what it earned on the previous weekend, underscoring its staying power. After 16 days, its India total stands at Rs 58.85 crore, and reports suggest it is heading towards the Rs 65 crore mark by the end of its third weekend.
The film is currently playing in 2,743 shows across the country, outnumbering several new releases. This dominant screen presence has made it the go-to horror flick for Indian audiences, especially in multiplex-heavy markets.
Backrooms Fails To Scare Up An Audience
Meanwhile, another horror film that released on June 12 — Backrooms — is struggling to find its footing. The movie opened with just Rs 1.25 crore on its first day and dropped to Rs 1.15 crore on Saturday, taking its two-day total to a mere Rs 2.40 crore. Insiders attribute the poor performance to mixed-to-negative reviews, which have dampened audience interest.
Despite the timing of a summer horror release, Backrooms failed to capitalise on the genre’s popularity. The gap between its numbers and Obsession highlights how crucial positive buzz is for horror films in India, where the audience tends to be selective about jump-scares and storytelling alike.
Disclosure Day Opens Decent, But Can’t Beat Obsession
Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day had a fairly steady launch in India, earning Rs 1.80 crore on Day 1 and Rs 2.50 crore on Day 2, taking its two-day total to Rs 4.30 crore. The film is currently playing in 1,442 shows, and is doing better than recent Hindi releases like Main Vaapas Aaunga, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, and Governor.
However, Obsession remains its strongest competitor in India, both in terms of collections and screen count. With steady weekend growth and consistent audience appreciation, Obsession is proving that a well-made horror film with the right buzz can still do impressive business in India — even weeks after its release.
